Great, so finally its arrived and I am quite impressed with my new pearl white coloured Asus EEE.
The Asus EEE is a tiny little thing and actually fits into my Barbour coat pocket and does not weigh much, just under 950 grams.
So for less than 400 Euros I have a great little machine to take with me to clients and to the cafe to surf the net and send mail.
Hey, Okay, it does not have Windows with all the frills, its running Linux and has the bare bones but its running firefox no problem and I am actually writing this blog entry using it, so its not all bad.
Open Office is installed so I have spreadsheets and Word Documents covered.
The model I have is the Asus EEE 701 (EEEPC4G) with 2Gb of Ram and 4Gb Solid State Drive.
As you can see sitting next to my iPod, the laptop is pretty small.

Start Up Time
It takes less than 25 seconds to boot from a cold startup. Thats impressive compared to my Windows "go and make coffee and hope it started up by then" Vista Computer.

Storage
It does not have a hard disc with moving parts which are prone to damage when bumped or dropped. The solid state disc can take some beating (although I have not tested chucking it on the floor yet). However the size of the disc is pretty small at 4GB, other models having 8GB. You can stick in an SD card or an external USB device to increase storage.

Built in Web Cam The built in web cam is quick and the resolution is great.

Open Office The machine comes with open office preinstalled which is free, unlike expensive microsoft office sofware.

The Asus EEE comes with 3 USB 2.0 ports for adding periphirals such as mice and external hard disks or thumbdrives.

Build Quality and Feel
Overall, the build quality is okay but the keyboard has a cheap feel about it and does in fact take some getting used to. If there was one thing I would change is the build quality of the keyboard. The nice thing is that the machine weighs less than 920 grams.

Touch Pad and click button
The touchpad is highly sensitive. I am going to be putting a piece of film over the touchpad (like the ones you get for the touchscreen phones) to give it more "grip". The click button is not the higest quality.

Speakers and Sound Quality
I browsed over to your tube and had no problem viewing a few vidieos and the sound was okay. However the height of the screen is not very tall so had some niggly difficulties watching videos.

Wirelss Connectivity
The wireless connection picked up hotspots pretty quickly and the strength was quite good.

Battery Life
The battery life of the Asus EEE is pretty good at a tad over 3.5 hours. The great thing about this compuetr is the power supply, its half the size of regular laptops.

All in all this is a great little machine to take with you on holiday or breaks or even to the cafe to check your webmail or update your blog, its not a laptop replacement and definitely not a desktop replacement, however at less than 400 euros its a great deal.
